How to Cook Lobster
Cooking Lobster is typically boiled or steamed. We've grilled lobster quite often in the past as well, but you'll find it prepared mostly boiled or steamed.
How to Boil Live Lobster
Fill a large pot (it's best to use a lobster pot with the lid) with water and 2 tablespoons of sea salt for every 2 quarts of water. Be sure the pot is large enough to fit the entire lobster. If you live near the ocean, fill the pot with salt water instead. The salt is important, otherwise your lobster will come out tough.
Bring the water to a roiling boil and drop the lobster into the pot head first. You'll typically boil the lobster for 10 minutes + 3 minutes for every pound over 1 pound. So, if your lobster is 2 pounds, it would equal 13 minutes. A 5 pound lobster would boil for 22 minutes.
The lobster shell will turn bright red when it is cooked. Remove the lobster, drain, and serve.
How to Boil Frozen Lobster
Use the same methods as above, but be sure to thaw the lobster first. Do not prepare from frozen. This also applies to boiling lobster tail, though you won't need as much time for the tails to boil.
How to Steam Lobster
Use a steaming rack and a large pot. Add two inches of water and one tablespoon of sea salt. Cover the pot and bring the water to a boil. Place the lobster on the steaming rack and steam 14 minutes for the first pound + 3 minutes for each additional pound.
